Aquino accepts Cusi’s resignation

12/22/2010 - PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Alfonso Cusi.

Cusi tendered his resignation amid reported pressure on him due to the problems besetting the agency.

In his resignation letter, Cusi said his appointment has been “politicized by certain quarters and consequently, cast doubts on his integrity and management competence”.
Cusi added he wanted to give Aquino “a free hand to choose a new director general whom he can give his full trust and will carry out the needed reforms in the aviation industry”.

President Aquino said there is already a replacement for Cusi and that he will just need to sign the appointment papers.

He meanwhile hinted the person has been part of the Air Force and works in the aviation industry in a private capacity.

“I think he is very capable to advance the agenda as far as the air travel in the country is concerned,” Aquino said.

“We want to fast track all of the problems that CAAP is supposed to be handling, amongst them the downgrade and the blacklisted in the European Union,” he added.

Cusi was appointed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as CAAP director general with a four-year fixed term.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda earlier criticized Cusi for opposing appointments of several technical people who will help man the aviation as means of improving the agency from the Category 2 classification.

Category 2 listing means that a country has failed the aviation safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“Now we can move faster in getting our country out of Category 2,” Lacierda said in reaction to Cusi’s resignation.

According to Lacierda, Cusi will be replaced by Ramon Gutierrez as acting officer-in-charge. Gutierrez was earlier appointed as CAAP’s deputy director general for administration. (Sun Star)
